Earth calls humans

The most hot night in Sydney, downpours and thunderstorms on Melbourne. Floods in Italy and France. Genoa bended to flooding. Earth is warning us.

It’s not because of a hypothetical apocalypse calendar that we are subject to these events. Climate is changing rapidly also because of humans. The fault of violent tropical storms, of the more destructive hurricanes, of the endless south U.S.A tornadoes, of the floods disasters in Europe and in Italy, are imputable to global warming and the main cause is attributed to the oceans that are increasingly hot. If it’s hard to avoid certain situations, it’s also true that the correct information and professionalism of the competent bodies could literally save life. Information is the basis of prevention, it couldn’t to be expected in Genoa a flooding on this scale?

The European climate scene is changing dramatically, towards 2070 it’s expected the increase of the annual northern water stream and a 36% decrease in the south and in 2080 there will be a carbon dioxide doubling in the atmosphere. It’s well-known that residents in watersheds subjected to water stress will increase gradually from 16 to 44 million people by 2080. Small mountain glaciers will disappear in different regions, while larger glaciers will suffer a substantial reduction in volume from 30 to 70% by 2050 and moreover river activity, soil humidity, groundwater, evapotranspiration and precipitation measurements in the oceans are not measured correctly. The changes monitoring is unevenly distributed in space and time, there is a general lack of data from southern hemisphere. These are accurate data, 2080 is far but not so much and there would be countless technological solutions to take.

Why we realize the terrible tragedies only when they happen? When nature rages, it’s always superior.

If the river flow was monitored and if the river’s bed maintenance was done, Genoa surely would not have been so awfully defeated by the rains of those days. It’s clear that is happening a change in the global climate, but it doesn’t depend only on the inadequacy of some specific governments or institutions, but to ourselves. Experts emphasized the significant role of the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions and the sustainable development activation. Bioenergy technologies can generate electricity, heat and fuels from a range of raw materials, most modern bioenergy systems, including liquid biofuels and greenhouse gases emissions reduction. Bioenergy, used primarily for traditional cooking and heating in developing countries, now represents over 10% of global energy supplies annually. Solar photovoltaic energy and solar concentration technologies are able to produce electricity, heat and light, but currently contributes only a fraction of 1% of total global energy supply. We must make a cultural change in resources choice. Earth has limited resources and today the global population is about 7 billion people. To avoid the collapse we need to learn to use renewable energy sources and convert ourselves to a proper lifestyle closer to the natural mechanism of our ecosystem.

The Green Cross International Board, which met in Geneva on September 23 and 24, debated about the many global challenges that must be faced by all: countries, companies and citizens. These challenges pertain to security, economy, environment and their close relationship, often cause of social tensions. The basic problem is that institutions and policies have been designed in a specific historical period, they haven’t been adapted to a rapidly changing world and to the XXI century’s challenges; economic growth models of industrialized economies that aim to increase the consumer demand, are destroying planet’s natural systems which we depend on and it’s unwillingly to recognize the reality and urgency of the threats that are rapidly approaching or better, we realize, and especially here in our country, only after accomplished fact.

“Collective intelligence is the only way we can evolve without worsen the weather worldwide conditions”

It would be needful a global strategy that may be our only real source of hope. By combining our energies in a form of collective intelligence. Intelligence is distributed wherever there is humanity and can be exploited to the maximum using the new techniques, putting it in synergy. Now if two faraway people know two complementary things, thanks to new technologies they can really communicate, share, cooperate and exchange their knowledge. This is the collective intelligence, with an ethics that places people in the service of the community allowing them to express themselves fully. This ethics recognizes all individual human qualities, now little valued, and makes sure that they can share with others to benefit the community. Surely you noticed the movement and the social machine has been established on social networks during the Liguria tragedy, we can’t longer wait for political debates. Anachronistic discussions make the situation even worse than it already is. We must therefore get ready for the world’s end? Yes, if we won’t change our resources understanding and their use. We must apply the designer mindset, who aims to use the resources provided by a place and not to destroy them. That’s a dinosaurs mentality and dinosaurs as we know are extinct. We must expand the concept of a collective and collaborative network of companies that convert themselves to zero-emission, that give us behavioral regulations and information. True information addressed to a greater care of Earth, that gave us a lot, from which we are asking too much. I leave you with a reflection on the intelligence and why it sometimes isn’t applied.
